A characterization of Chilean farmers based on their market-production orientation Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Echeverría,Rodrigo; Moreira,Víctor; Barrena,José; Gopinath,Munisamy.
Chile's open trade policy, implemented during the last few decades, has greatly transformed Chilean farmers and their production systems. As a result, farmers can be grouped into three categories based on their market-production orientation: domestic, transitional or export producers. The objective of this paper is to analyze the factors underlying the decision to produce for a particular market and compare the three groups of farmers based on data from the 2007 agricultural census. A generalized ordered logit model was used to analyze different methods of production, and non-parametric methods were used to compare the groups. Results show that some farmers change categories in sequence; farmers that produce for the domestic market can later produce for...

Export Behaviour in the Chilean Agribusiness and Food Processing Industry Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Echeverría,Rodrigo; Gopinath,Munisamy.
This paper analyzes the export-behavior of Chilean agribusiness and food processing firms and the relative importance of firm-specific and geographic characteristics in this behavior. Using firm level data and regional geographic indicators, a dynamic model was used to study the export decisions and the export intensity of three industries: processing fish, processing fruits and vegetables, and wine production. Results showed that determinants of exporting behavior vary among the three industries, except the effect of sunk costs, which strongly impacts the export decisions of all analyzed industries. This implies that firms with prior export experience will have higher probability of exporting in the future. Foreign ownership positively impacts the export...

Factors that influence the use of contract farming by southern Chilean farmers Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Morales,Liliana; Echeverría,Rodrigo; Barrera,María del V.
Unlike in the central zone of Chile, the use of contract farming (CF) is uncommon in the southern regions of the country, and few studies have attempted to explain this situation. The objective of this study was to analyze the factors that influence the use of CF in southern Chile. The methodology consisted of two approaches: a quantitative approach, wherein a multinomial logit model was applied to data obtained from questionnaires completed by 384 southern producers, and a qualitative approach that included in-depth individual interviews with professionals, officials of public institutions, and producer focus groups. The main results show that producers with high educational levels, large farms, and production oriented toward the export market who are...

Farmer strategies to face labor shortages in Chilean agriculture Ciência Rural
Aguirre,Verónica; Echeverría,Rodrigo; Olmedo,Clara; Blanco,Gustavo.
This study analyzes the strategies that farmers in the south of Chile use to face current labor shortages and identify the variables that determine each of these strategies. A multinomial logit model and odds ratios plots with predicted probabilities were applied to a sample of 384 farmers. Interviews and focus groups were applied to specific producers, professionals and public officials. The main results show that only 32.3% of farmers declared that labor shortage is a problem. Of this percentage 52% chose the strategy of paying better, 13.8% chose improve the workers' working conditions, 9.5% chose to mechanize, and 24.1% did not follow a strategy. The production of labor-intensive products (e.g., exportable fruit) determines the strategy of paying...
